Or they make it way more complicated than it needs to be for preschool and kindergarten kids.
The science of reading tells us that learning to read isn't hardwired in the brain.
Children need to be taught letter-sound correspondences — phonics — to write and read in English.
You know teaching read is too important to just wing it, so you've been searching "how to teach my child to read" on Google, Pinterest or YouTube.
BUT ... Your search results include lots of letter of the week, whole language and balanced literacy curriculums that aren't supported by the research!
And Do It In A Way That's Low Key & Fun In Less Than 15 Minutes A Day!

And Have Peace Of Mind Knowing That Your Child Is On Track
Here's How I Can Help
So You Can Go From Overwhelmed To Empowered
You've got what it takes to help your child learn to read at home!
You just need the structure, resources and support that takes away all of the overwhelm.
I'm the Montessori teacher who will guide you through the entire process with a clear plan that’s easy to follow.
You'll learn the 4 steps in the learning sequence from pre-reading to early reading.
You'll learn the child-led learning framework and mindset that eases the pressure you're feeling right now.
The Success Path flowchart will tell you exactly where your child is in the process of learning to read.
You'll do fun Montessori activities that help your child get to closer to reading and appeal every child's need to learn through the senses and movement.
Then you'll observe your child and refer to the milestones on the Success Path to know when your child is ready for the next step.
WANT A PEEK AT YOUR PATH TO TEACHING PHONICS AT HOME?
The video training covers the big picture and offers tips to get organized so you feel confident about getting started right away.
This step develops phonemic awareness to help your child understand that words are made up of speech sounds. This essential pre-reading skill makes it easier to learn phonics. You'll only need your voice and your child's ears to get started, but you can also use pictures or objects as props to boost engagement.
This step helps your child learn basic and advanced phonics. You'll start with the 26 letter sounds and then layer on 16 common digraphs so your child begins learning advanced phonics. You'll use either cursive or print sandpaper letters to build visual, auditory and muscular memory of the symbol for each phoneme.
This step develops encoding skills. You'll show your child how to segment spoken words into individual phonemes, and then put those sounds in a row to "write" or "spell" the word using a moveable alphabet.
This step develops decoding skills and covers the 3 keys to reading. Your child will sound out words and then practice reading phrases and sentences using basic and advanced phonics and some high frequency words.
You Also Get The Complete Set Of Printables
This bonus module includes pre-writing activity ideas to develop the muscles in the hands for holding a pencil, and then it covers everything you need to know about the Montessori way to help your child begin handwriting using print or cursive letters.
Swapping out the printable pictures with real objects is a fun way to encourage repetition without having to prepare a whole new activity. If you'd like to buy a pre-made set of phonics objects, or if you're looking for more objects for specific sounds, use your promo code for 30% off your order from my shop!
This phonics program is unique because it includes ongoing support from Lisa Adele, a trained Montessori teacher. At any time, you can describe what you observe when doing the activities, or even send a video, and get feedback via email.
I've Still Got Some Questions
Most children around 2½ to 3 years old are ready for the Step 1 activities to become aware of the speech sounds in spoken words.
Since spoken language is the foundation for written language, it's important that your child has gone through the language explosion stage as a toddler and is now talking in short sentences.
Up to this point, your child has been focused on learning the names of things, but now you'll be inviting your child to pay attention to the individual speech sounds in those words.
Does your child remember the names of some shapes, colors and animals? That's a good sign that your child's brain is ready to begin learning about abstract concepts such as understanding that letters are symbols that represent speech sounds.
Children who start Step 1 of this phonics program at around 3 years old will typically be ready for the first reading activity in Step 4 at around 4½ years old.

This phonics program includes everything you need, but hands-on Montessori materials are always going to be better than printable versions.
I highly recommend that you purchase a set of Montessori sandpaper letters for Step 2 and a Montessori moveable alphabet for Step 3. Inside the course you'll see recommended vendors.
You'll get a checklist of ideas for objects you can gather from around your home if you want to use those for Steps 1-4 instead of printing the pictures.
You might also find it convenient to buy a set of phonics objects from my shop, but I offer 30% off this purchase for all members of The Playful Path To Reading.
The words to practice reading in Step 4 can be handwritten on a whiteboard or pieces of paper if you want to avoid printing costs. It saves a lot of time just having the word lists all organized for you, even if you don't use all of the printables.
YES! You'll get my ongoing support and guidance via email or when you ask questions in the comments area inside the online course platform.
The activities develop pre-reading and early reading skills so that your child can read decodable books for emergent readers.
Your child will develop phonemic awareness (including segmenting and blending), letter-sound correspondence for all 40+ sounds in the English language, and the encoding and decoding skills needed to write and read using basic and advanced phonics.
Although The Playful Path To Reading isn't a spelling program, there's an activity in Step 4 that introduces different ways to spell some common phonemes.
You'll also get a bonus module that covers everything you need to know to teach your child handwriting the Montessori way.
YES! The materials and activities in this phonics program are based on Lisa Adele's Montessori training (Association Montessori Internationale / AMI) and her years of experience as a Montessori teacher of children 3 to 6 years old at an accredited Montessori school in Canada.
Many parents who have already joined The Playful Path to Reading are bilingual or trilingual, and English is not their first language.
If you're feeling unsure about teaching your child to read in English because it isn't your first language, then that's all the more reason to invest in this phonics program and educate yourself so you can better support your child at home.
As long as the other language is "alphabetic" (speech sounds are represented by letter symbols), then you can follow the same steps to teach reading.
You will need to adapt the use of the printables because the pictures represent words that will likely start with a beginning sound that's different in your language, and your language may have more or different speech sounds compared with English.
For reading practice, you will need to follow the examples provided in English to create your own word lists, phrases and sentences in your language.
Some parents who've invested in this phonics program have said they felt excited and hopeful when they joined and they also reported some lingering doubts about their capacity to finish the course after buying it.
But, they decided to jump in anyways because being able to better support their children with reading was more important to them than their concerns about sticking with it.
The Playful Path To Reading offers a shortcut that takes away all of the guesswork with teaching reading at home.
You'll get a step-by-step plan that's really easy to follow. Plus, you'll get emails that check in on you so you can share how it's going. At any time you can ask questions and get encouragement.
Most of the video lessons are under 10 minutes, and the training is entirely self-paced.
If you commit to the process, it will work!
